The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.
Monday, February 2, 2026 - Caucus Day
Monday, February 23, 2026 - State & Federal Candidate Filing Begins
(First day for Democratic and Republican candidates for state and federal offices of State for the primary and general elections)
Monday, March 2, 2026 - County Candidate Filing Begins
(First day for Democratic & Republican candidates for county offices to file nomination papers with the auditor for the primary and general elections)

Monday, May 18 @ 5PM - Voter Pre-Registration Deadline & Deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed
Saturday, May 30 - Auditor's Office will be open 9AM until 5PM
Monday, June 1 @ 4PM - Deadline to vote Absentee Ballot in-person
Tuesday, June 2 - Election Day
Polls are open 7AM until 8PM
Tuesday, June 9 County Canvass of Votes held by County Supervisors
